School-Based Programs

School-Based Programs

The Adolescent Health and Youth Development hub leads school-based initiatives aimed at improving the health and academic outcomes of K–12 students across Cuyahoga County. In partnership with the First Ring Schools Collaborative, the PRCHN was recently awarded $1.8 million in federal funding through the CDC’s “What Works in Schools” initiative—designed to help schools create healthier environments that support student achievement.

This multi-year effort unites 15 school districts, the Educational Service Center of Northeast Ohio, and the Social Advocates for Youth Coalition in a shared commitment: to empower schools as critical environments for fostering physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Through this partnership,  the PRCHN provides:

  • Academic and research expertise

  • Evidence-based strategies and evaluation support

  • Technical assistance for implementation and improvement

In turn, participating districts implement tailored programs that promote:

  • Healthy eating and nutrition

  • Physical activity and fitness

  • Mental health supports

  • Substance-use prevention

The program also includes educator training, family engagement workshops, and curriculum development aligned with CDC best practices.

Partner School Districts:

Beachwood | Bedford | Berea | Brooklyn | Cleveland Heights–University Heights | East Cleveland | Fairview Park | Garfield Heights | Mayfield | Orange | Richmond Heights | Shaker Heights | Solon | South Euclid–Lyndhurst | Warrensville Heights

This growing initiative seeks to expand to additional Cuyahoga County districts and serve as a national model for school health—grounded in collaboration, equity, and community engagement.

“We believe all children are entitled to both resources and opportunities to build and foster a healthy life,” said Kristina Knight, PRCHN Project Director. “Schools are a vital setting for improving health outcomes, and, together, we will work to ensure that every child has the tools they need to thrive physically, mentally, and emotionally.”
